Today's episode involves an interview with Rachel of Contented and some discussion about the quilt along which officially kicks off today. The official kick off post can be found here on Rachel's blog today. I hope you enjoy the podcast. It does get a bit emotional at the end as I talk about World Alzheimer's Day which is today but I won't apologize for that - I love my grandma and hate to see her suffer.
I had so much fun with Rachel's interview and she was a great sport by sharing some of her first's. For example here is her first quilt...
Also, when Rachel first started quilting she made herself a sewing machine cover. Now....remember this was early in her sewing career. Her words are "God, I can’t believe I’m going to let you show this, it’s so awful!" I completely disagree...not awful - just a learning experience! Here are a couple shots of that.
I can prove this sewing machine cover was a learning experience. Just look at the beautiful work she is doing today. These are the two QT quilts she made for the 2 rounds of the swap she participated in. I love the circle one....
Now on to her sewing space! It starts off innocent enough. Here is a picture of her sewing machine sitting on a cute little mug rug of sorts...
Then an overlook of the sideboard (a few bins here and there but not too messy)...
Then we move on to what Rachel affectionately refers to as "the jumble sale". This is where she stores her scraps and such of fabric (this needs some straightening up but doable)....
Then this is the one I gave her a real hard time about...the large pieces that aren't even folded. The OCD part of my almost went into convulsions. I was having heart palpitations.

| Seriously, just fold it up! I love ya Rachel ! |
| Isn't that better? So, much better!! |
I hope you will join us in the quilt along. Please go over to her blog (Contented) and check out the kick-off post. She will have all the information there (and it is in the podcast). Feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns. Oh and don't forget to join the Flickr Group (we are having some very interesting discussions).
We have a great sponsor, The Intrepid Thread, who is offering a 15% discount for all participants. You have contact Rachel or I for the discount code. Also, Julie is hosting the giveaway at the end of the QAL - a $25 gift certificate to her shop. You must participate along the way and then post a picture of your project at the end to be entered.
BTW...you will notice the player is missing on this podcast post. It costs me broadband usage to play it here. So if you listen to my podcast online (versus via iTunes) please go to my Podomatic site to listen there. I am sorry for the inconvenience. I have had to resort to paying for hosting the podcast and this is one way I have found to save.

ReplyDeleteGlad you posted your hosting site here. My iTunes store is broke (long story), and your previous link didn't help before (more long story).
Will now be able to listen again. Which is a good thing.

My heart always skips a beat when I see a messy workspace - so normal!! Love those QT quilts - what does QT mean?
ReplyDeleteShhhh! Rachel is still sleeping at this hour. Tee hee.

ReplyDeleteI tried to email you back but you are a no-reply blogger. Please email me at gap(dot)rhonda(at)gmail(dot)com
Thank you for sharing Rachel's first quilt and cover with us. Although there is nothing wrong with her quilt, you can tell by her more recent work that she has really learned and improved. That should give new quilters hope that they, too, will grow as quilters.
ReplyDelete(Don't ever come peak in my cabinets, by the way! Sometimes they are very neat but not while I am pressed for time! I'm so bad about "stashing" and getting back to it later!)
I'm in and very excited. I may even make a set of projects to do one by hand and the other on the machine. Please send me the discount code I can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteHello Rhonda!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt along sounds fun but I don`t understand what does mean duo? It`s use two color ,two block or what?thanks so much
So YOU'RE the one I can blame for that mug rug swap!!! lol
ReplyDeleteI wonder if those who can hand quilt are just afraid of making mistakes with FMQ (free motion quilting) and those who FMQ are afraid they won't "do it right" when hand quilting?
I do both. Sometimes they turn out great and sometimes they turn out not so great. I am like you, I think. I don't care...yes, I TRY to do the best, but the thought of frog quilting where you rippit rippit rippit out, bothers me more than having perfect quilting.
FMQ, when I started, I just did it. I still can't do fancy feathers and such. I don't even stitch in the ditch perfectly. Some quilts are better than others. All of them won't come apart because I quilt the H - E - double toothpicks out of all my quilts. :D
Well Miss Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteMy own father-in-law died of Alzheimer's over a ten year period. It was terrible and brutal. I am sending you my empathy over this space. It is pretty awful and there are no real words to describe the real time tragedy of watching your beloved relative lose their functioning.
My only advice to you - as the granddaughter - is what I give to others as a speech therapist - when I am in professional mode. I truly believe there is the capacity for fun and joy in patients with Alzheimer's disease. So perhaps when you visit her, see if she still enjoys music or picture books, etc. If you can find something she enjoys, then you have done a good, good thing. Maybe you can look children's books, dance with her or even if it is just getting her hair brushed or her hands massaged. Take care Rhonda.
Regards,
KellyV
I can't imagine how difficult it must be to watch someone you love affected by Alzheimers. Sending my thoughts & best wishes to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteGreat podcast as normal! I quite like Rachel's sewing machine cover, reminds me of being in slouchy PJ's! And I love my PJ's!
Think I will be watching the qal from the sidelines because realistically I will not have time. Looking forward to it though I'm sure I will use it later!
Loved this episode, Rhonda! I'm laughing so hard at your comments about your OCD.. On a bad day, my sewing room would give you an apoplexy! (and I'd love to hear you try to pronounce that one.. hee hee!) I know what you mean about words sounding righ tin your head, and coming out all wrong.. For me that word is "publicity." It comes out of my mouth like "plu-bli-city." lol
ReplyDeleteI love the jam or jelly question because I fight about this when my husband does the shopping. I hate packing school lunches when he buys jelly, because it doesn't spread! it globs up and makes a mess and tears the bread.. LOL. I like jam, it's nice and smooth, and spreads so easily. Although, you can buy it seedless, ya know.. I get seedless blackberry jam, it's lovely! I think the main difference between jam and jelly is that one is spreadable, and one is a pain in the patoot! :-)

I forgot to say.. I don't think the machine cover is so bad! I love the fabric, and on the bright side, it will fit any machine she buys in the future.. So it's not tailored.. who cares, Heidi Klum isn't judging it.. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour podcasts are not showing up in iTunes. I have downloaded them from pod-o-matic, but I wonder if there is some problem on your end? I am checking on my end. Since I am a new listener (very much enjoying your long rambles!), I might just be lame!
