Looking for the Post 2nd Quarter Linky Party? You can find it here.
Hey y'all....today we have the pleasure of having Connie over for a visit! She quilts by the River (not to be confused with The Gap). Her blog is so much fun...if you have never been over to the River, you really should! Not only will you find great project to inspire you, some beautiful/handsome grandkids, and the many post Connie has her hands in, but you will also find a Linky Party there every Tuesday! Seriously....no way to get board around Connie's place!!
A while back I seen these adorable sleeping bags Connie was making and knew I needed to make a couple for Callee (have you ever seen a picture of her? I know, now is not the time....but soon) when she is a little older and plays with babies more. So, I asked Connie to publish a tutorial here. She is ever so kind and was willing to do so! Thanks Connie...glad you are here!
Read the directions and then if you have a bigger doll just adjust the size. The easiest way is to lay a piece of fabric over your doll and see how much fabric is taken up by the girth of the doll.
This sleeping bag was done with just plain pieces of fabric instead of the strip piecing. If you strip piece just do your pieces the sizes shown.
Front, batting and backing
- Cut a 8 by 12 inch piece of each
- Cut a 5 1/2 x 9 inch piece of each - this is bigger so you can put a tuck in it to make more room for the doll
- Quilt as desired, I just did a straight stitch about a inch apart
- Cut a piece of binding 2 1/2 inches by 9 inches and sew to the top of the quilted front piece - fold over and top stitch (sorry I forgot to take a picture of this)
Now put a pin in the center of the front and back, then pin the sides.
Make 2 little tucks so that the bottom lies flat.
Stitch to hold in place.
Cut a piece of binding 2 1/2 inches long and sew to the back side. Then fold over to the front and top stitch.
Here is what it looks like so far.
Now fold the top down about 3 inches to form the pillow
Put some stuffing in it and top stitch on the binding to enclose the stuffing.
Your finished sleeping bag!
This size holds a Beanie Baby too.
Or a cute little bear!
I thought I would show a couple pictures of the strip piecing. I just added strips at a angle to cover the backing and batting and then trimmed it to the size I wanted. When I made the first one I just turned down the top a 1/4 inch, top stitched it, folded it down 3 inches and stuffed some batting in.
Then I pinned on the top piece and put binding around 3 sides.
I didn't like the way I finished my binding on the ends so decided to change the way I bound the whole thing.I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and make some for the little ones! You could adjust the size for a bigger doll.
Be sure and stop by Quilting by the River where I have lots of other tutorials to share with you.
Oh, and Rhonda says the Pre 3rd Quarter Link Party that will start right here on July 8th and run for 7 days. If you don't get your list in on during this time you won't qualify for the amazing 3rd quarter prizes!!! Be sure to get ready!!!

I love the sleeping bag and I made some for my neighbor's children for Christmas and she told me her daughter tucks her babies in the sleeping bag every night. I love the pillow part.
ReplyDeleteI would so put an embroidery hoop in there, not a toy!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome guest and thanks for visiting Connie!!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! About 25 years ago I did a 'Teddy in bed' pyjama case to raffle at Mums and Tots, this is just a daintier cuter variant on a similar idea! Much cuter than what I made!
